Where Is My Ad Budget Going?

3 min read19 August 2026

The invoice arrives at the end of the month, the figure is clear, but what’s inside it isn’t. There is a way to break the spend down in Google Ads — four reports are enough.

Open these four in order

1. Campaign breakdown. The crudest view, but the starting point. What did each campaign spend and what did it return? This is usually where you find one campaign taking most of the budget and returning the fewest conversions.

2. Search terms report. The important one. The actual searches your ad appeared for live here. Your keyword may be “steel doors” while the ad also showed for “how to paint steel doors”. The gap between those two lines is where your budget quietly evaporates.

3. Network breakdown. Search Network, Search Partners or Display? The Display Network option that comes switched on by default at setup quietly diverts part of the budget in plenty of accounts whose owners believe they built a search campaign.

4. Location and hour breakdown. Money spent in cities you don’t serve and during hours you’re closed becomes visible here.

The five quiet budget eaters

Broad match. Leaving keywords on broad match tells Google to show you on whatever it deems relevant. Without negative keyword discipline this setting drains budget faster than anything else. The fix is negative keyword management.

Wide research queries. Searches containing “price”, “what is” or “how to” come from someone still researching. You don’t have to switch them off entirely, but they belong in a separate campaign with a separate budget.

Unmeasured conversions. If phone calls or WhatsApp messages aren’t counted as conversions, you’ll mistake a working campaign for a failing one and switch it off. That’s the most insidious way to lose money.

Auto-applied recommendations. If Google’s auto-apply setting is left on, the account can add keywords and raise budgets without your knowledge. One of the first settings to check after setup.

Performance Max left unchecked. This campaign type spends one budget across many placements. If brand searches aren’t excluded, you’re re-buying traffic that was already coming to you.

What to do next

Once the breakdown exists, the order is simple: fix measurement first, cut the wasted searches second, and only then shift budget to what remains. Done in reverse — which is what usually happens — you never learn which change did the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my spend exceed my daily budget some days?

Google can overspend the daily figure on busy days and underspend on quiet ones. It doesn’t exceed the monthly limit you set.

My click count is low but my spend is high, is that normal?

It means your cost per click is high. That can be normal in a competitive market, but if your quality score is low you may be paying more than necessary for the same position.

How do I decide which campaign to switch off?

By cost per acquired customer, not by spend. A campaign that spends little and returns nothing can be worse than one that spends a lot and returns plenty — budget optimisation sets up that comparison.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your website and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend has a lasting result on your site. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
