How Much Do Google Ads Cost?

3 min read19 August 2026

There is no single answer to “how much do Google Ads cost”, because Google doesn’t set the price — the competitors bidding on the same keyword do. But once you know what the number is made of, you can work out your own.

Cost has three parts

Ad spend. What you pay Google directly. You set the daily budget and there is no required minimum.

Cost per click. The part you don’t set. It ranges from a few pounds to a great deal more depending on the sector. In law, insurance and cosmetic treatments — where one customer is worth a lot — clicks are expensive. In retail they are usually cheap.

Management. Whether you run the account yourself or pay someone. I covered that decision on a separate page.

Working out a monthly budget

Budget shouldn’t start from “what can I afford” but from “what is a customer worth to me”. The sequence:

  1. What is the average profit from one customer?
  2. How many enquiries turn into one customer?
  3. How many clicks produce one enquiry?

Those three give you how many clicks a customer costs and therefore what you can afford to pay per click. If your profit is £500 and one customer comes from every 20 clicks, you break even at £25 a click.

The problem with a very small budget

When the daily budget falls to a small multiple of the cost per click, the ad shows a handful of times a day and never accumulates meaningful data. The real problem here isn’t that the budget is small — it’s that you learn nothing: you can’t see which keyword is working, so you can’t optimise either.

With a tight budget the right move is not to shrink the campaign but to narrow it: few keywords, one city, one service. That way the small budget doesn’t scatter.

When to increase it

The right moment to raise the budget is when the campaign spends out before the day ends — meaning there is more demand but you’re invisible for it. Google labels this “limited by budget” and shows it plainly in the interface. Leaving a profitable campaign budget-limited is choosing to leave money on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum I have to spend?

There is no required minimum. But if clicks in your sector cost £4 and your daily budget is £5, that’s one click a day — not enough to conclude anything.

Can I lower my cost per click?

Not directly, but yes indirectly. The better your ad copy and landing page answer the search, the cheaper Google gives you the same position. An account audit measures exactly this.

Will my whole budget be spent?

Your daily budget is a ceiling. If there isn’t enough search volume it won’t be spent. Google may exceed the daily figure on busy days but never exceeds your monthly limit.

What happens if I pause the ads?

Your visibility drops to zero the same day. Advertising works like rent, not equity. For visibility that persists you need the organic side alongside it.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your website and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend has a lasting result on your site. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
