Ranking First on Google
Behind the sentence “I want to rank first on Google” sit two entirely different jobs, and neither substitutes for the other. Which one suits you depends on how long you can wait and how your budget flows.
What’s actually on the results page
A search shows you three separate zones:
- Ads at the top — marked “Sponsored”. You get in with money, and you can be there the same day.
- The map pack — the business listing on local searches. You get in through a Google Business Profile, free of charge.
- Organic results — the part that cannot be bought. You get in through content and technical quality.
Most firms mean the first zone when they say “first place”, but what they usually want is the third.
Top spot through ads: fast but rented
Open an account today, set a budget, and you can be at the top within hours. The advantages are speed and control: you choose the keyword, the city and the time of day.
The drawback is that visibility resets the day you stop paying. Advertising doesn’t accumulate. I covered what it costs on a separate page.
Top spot through organic: slow but durable
Position in the organic results isn’t for sale. Google picks the page that best answers the query, and that choice depends on how well your page covers the subject, the technical state of the site, and how much other sites reference you.
The price is time. It can take months for a new page to reach the top for a competitive query. But once it’s there, there’s no cost per click.
Which one suits you?
If you need customers now, ads. For a new business, a seasonal trade or a service you’re testing, the organic side is simply too slow.
If you don’t want to buy the same customer again every month, organic. It’s the only route that lowers cost over time.
In practice the answer is usually both. Ads bring in today’s customers while also teaching you which keywords genuinely convert; that data tells you which pages to write on the organic side. SEO without ads proceeds on guesswork, and ads without SEO never get cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does paying Google improve my organic ranking?
No. Ad spend has no effect on organic rankings; the two systems run separately. If someone promises otherwise, walk away.
How long does SEO take to work?
It varies with competition, but it’s measured in months, not weeks. Technical obstacles on your site stretch that further — a technical SEO audit is usually the first step.
Is appearing in AI answers a separate job?
Increasingly, yes. How ChatGPT and similar tools pick sources works differently from classic ranking; I covered it on the AI visibility audit page.
What about agencies that guarantee first place?
No one can guarantee it organically, because Google decides. Even on the ads side a “first place” guarantee is really a budget promise — the measure should be customers, not position.
How do I work?
Work-hour packages
Tell me about your website and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend has a lasting result on your site. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.
Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?
On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
