My Business Isn't Showing on Google Maps

3 min read19 August 2026

Map results are a separate system from your website’s ranking on Google. Your site could be first and you could still be absent from the map — because that space is driven by your Google Business Profile.

Make this distinction first

You don’t appear at all. The profile is missing, unverified or suspended.

You appear but get buried. The profile exists and this is a ranking problem. The two need different fixes.

If you don’t appear at all

Is the profile verified? An unverified profile isn’t listed on the map. Verification is usually done by postcard, phone or video; which options you’re offered varies by sector.

Could it be suspended? Changing a lot of information in a short time, using an address that isn’t real, or a mismatch between your category and what you actually do all trigger suspension. When this happens there’s a warning in the dashboard.

Is the address really where you provide the service? Virtual offices and co-working addresses cause problems regularly. If you work from home, the correct setup is to hide the address and define a service area instead.

If you appear but rank low

Three things drive map ranking, and all three are in your hands:

1. Distance. How far you are from the person searching. You can’t change this — which is why “ranking first across the whole city” isn’t a realistic goal.

2. Relevance. How well your profile matches what was searched. The most commonly skipped item here is the primary category: with the wrong one, you aren’t even considered for the right searches. Listing services individually, actually filling in the description, and adding products all count here too.

3. Prominence. Review count and rating, your website, and your address and phone details as they appear on other sites. Reviews arriving steadily works better than a one-off cluster.

The four most common mistakes

  • The category is set to something generic instead of the specific one for your sector
  • Opening hours are out of date and holiday hours were never entered
  • No photos, or photos from years ago
  • Reviews never get a reply — replying to reviews affects both ranking and the decision to call

Frequently Asked Questions

I find my own business but customers can’t, why?

Google tailors results to your location and search history. Seeing your own business doesn’t mean you rank well — the performance report inside the profile shows the real picture.

I have no premises, I work on site. Can I still have a profile?

Yes. There’s a profile type that hides the address and defines a service area instead. That’s the right one for plumbers, removals, mobile services and similar.

Does buying reviews work?

No, and it’s risky. When Google detects fake review patterns it removes them, and repeat offences can get the profile suspended. The only durable route is asking real customers regularly.

Can I appear on Maps without a website?

You can — the profile works independently. But a site contributes as a prominence signal, and your site not showing on Google is a separate issue.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your website and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend has a lasting result on your site. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
