I Never Installed Analytics — Can I Get Past Data?
Short answer: no, it doesn’t. Google Analytics collects data from the moment it is installed; the visitors you had before that were never recorded anywhere and can’t be retrieved. Annoying, but recoverable in part.
Why it can’t go back
Analytics works through a piece of code you add to your site. While that code isn’t on the page, nobody is measured — and there’s no way to extract something that was never recorded. There is no setting for “I opened the account today but I’d like to see last year”.
The same applies to new conversion actions: if you start measuring “form submission” today, the forms you received last month won’t appear in the report.
Where you can partly make up for it
Analytics can’t go back, but other sources do hold history:
Search Console — it accumulates data independently of your setup, and once you verify the site it shows up to 16 months of past search data. You can see which queries were bringing clicks.
Google Ads — if you were advertising, click and spend history is already in the account. The only thing that wasn’t measured is conversions.
Server logs — the visitor statistics in your hosting panel are crude but they exist, and at least give you a sense of traffic volume.
Your own records — your sales, quotes and call logs. These are actually more reliable than Analytics, because they show work that actually happened.
What to do today
Nothing can be done about the history you lost, but the loss grows every day. The order:
- Google Analytics 4 setup — get the counter running first
- Conversion tracking — measure useful traffic, not just traffic
- Search Console verification — this unlocks the past search data
- If you’re advertising, the Google Ads–GA4 link
Without the first two, your ad budget decisions rest on guesswork.
How long before it’s useful
You need at least a month of data after setup for a meaningful comparison, longer if your business is seasonal. So “let’s advertise for a few months first and set up measurement later” is the wrong way round — measurement goes first.
Want me to set it up? I can install the counter and conversions properly and show you exactly what is being measured. Get in touch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my old Universal Analytics data still there?
Universal Analytics was shut down and its data deleted. If you didn’t export it, it’s gone. GA4 is a separate system and did not inherit that data.
The code is on the site but there’s no data — why?
The code may be in the wrong place, the measurement ID may be wrong, or cookie consent may be blocking measurement. Consent Mode setup and event tracking come in here.
Is it too late to install it now?
No. Installing today means one more day of data than installing tomorrow. The only cost of being late is not knowing the past — it doesn’t stop you measuring the future.
Can I see my competitors’ data?
Not through Analytics; that’s private. But on the advertising side you can use auction insights and search data for comparison — competitor analysis covers that.
How do I work?
Work-hour packages
Tell me about your website and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend has a lasting result on your site. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.
Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?
On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
