My PageSpeed Score Is Low — Does It Matter?

3 min read19 August 2026

You put your site into PageSpeed Insights and a red 42 came back. Before panicking: that number is not what determines your ranking, and chasing 100 is a waste of money for most sites.

The score and what Google looks at are not the same

PageSpeed shows you two different things, and this is exactly what gets confused:

The lab score (0-100). The grade Google gives after loading your page on a simulated device and connection. Colourful, prominent, the number everyone looks at. But a simulation.

Field data (Core Web Vitals). Collected from real Chrome users who actually visited your site. It sits higher up the page in duller type and usually gets skipped.

The second one is what affects ranking. The lab score is a diagnostic tool; what Google uses is real user data. A site scoring 60 with good field data is in better shape than one scoring 90 with poor field data.

The three measures that matter

  • LCP — how long the main content takes to appear. Usually the largest image or heading.
  • INP — how long the page takes to respond when someone taps.
  • CLS — content jumping around as the page loads, typically when images or ads load without reserved space.

If all three are green, a score of 60 is not a practical problem.

Why speed actually matters

Ranking aside, speed is a money question. On a slow page the visitor leaves, and you have already paid for that click. If you’re advertising, slowness costs twice: once in the customer you lost, and once because Google factors landing page experience into your quality score.

So the real question isn’t “what’s my score” but “are people waiting after they tap”.

Which warnings matter, which don’t

Usually worth acting on: uncompressed or oversized images, a main image that loads late on the first screen, no caching, and plugin files loading on every page that don’t need to.

Usually safe to ignore: warnings about third-party scripts (tag manager, chat widget, pixel) — these keep your measurement and your sales running, and you don’t strip them out for a score. Some recommendations also keep appearing after you’ve already applied them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What score should I aim for?

Not a number — all three measures green. Plenty of sites sitting at 50-70 on mobile have good field data.

It’s different every time I test, is that normal?

Yes. The lab test runs under different conditions each time, so don’t decide on a single measurement. Field data is a 28-day average and far more stable.

My site is very slow, where do I start?

By finding what’s actually slowing it down — I set out the order on the my site loads very slowly page. Adding a plugin is usually not step one.

Is WooCommerce different?

Yes. Cart and account pages can’t be cached, so they’re handled separately — see WooCommerce speed optimisation.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your website and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend has a lasting result on your site. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
