How Often Will the Same Person See My Ad?

3 min read19 August 2026

“Am I annoying people?” is a fair worry, and it has a measure. The measure is called frequency: how many times, on average, one person sees your ad over a given period.

Where frequency matters and where it doesn’t

The distinction matters: frequency is almost never a problem on search ads. There, the ad only appears when someone searches; nobody sees what they didn’t look for.

It becomes a problem on ads that appear without being asked for: display, YouTube, the Instagram and Facebook feed, remarketing. Here the same creative can appear many times a day.

Signs frequency has climbed

If these three appear together in reporting, frequency has gone up:

  • Frequency rises while reach (how many distinct people you’re hitting) doesn’t — you’re showing more to the same people
  • Click-through rate falls while impressions hold steady
  • Cost per impression stays flat while conversions decline

This pattern usually comes from an audience that is too narrow. With a fixed budget and a shrinking audience, the system has to show more often to the same people in order to spend it.

How to cap it

On Google, display and video campaigns allow a frequency cap at campaign level: a maximum number of impressions per person per day or week.

On Meta, a direct cap field exists only for certain campaign objectives; elsewhere the control is indirect — widen the audience, add more ads, or lengthen the flight.

But the real fix is usually not a numeric cap. Someone seeing the same creative for the fifth time gets tired of it; someone seeing one of three different creatives for the fifth time doesn’t. So adding creative generally beats cutting frequency.

Cutting it too far has a cost too

The other side deserves saying: an ad seen once is usually not remembered. If you’re reaching an audience that doesn’t know you yet, expecting a decision from a single impression is optimistic. Capping frequency too aggressively can mean scattering budget across impressions that leave no trace at all.

The better question isn’t “what number should it be” but “am I saying something different each time this person sees me”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cap frequency on search ads?

There’s no direct field, because impressions depend on the user’s search. Limiting how often the same person can search is something you wouldn’t want anyway — that person is your most interested one.

How long should I keep retargeting someone?

It depends on the decision cycle of what you sell. A short window for a quick purchase, a longer one for a considered service. Set the audience membership duration so people drop out when the window closes.

Are users hiding or reporting my ad a frequency signal?

Usually yes. On Meta, a rise in negative feedback is one of the clearest signs the same creative is repeating too much.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your website and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend has a lasting result on your site. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
