Google Ads Policy Violation | Why Ads Get Disapproved

3 min read18 August 2026

When an ad is disapproved or limited in Google Ads, the cause is more often the page the ad points to than the ad copy. The review system evaluates the ad, the landing page and the site as a whole together.

Disapproved versus limited

A disapproved ad does not serve at all. A limited ad does serve, but not in certain regions or to certain users — and this second case is insidious, because the campaign looks like it is running while part of its reach is quietly switched off.

Limitations appear in the ad status in the interface, but without regular checks they go unnoticed for months. I come across accounts where this turns out to be the reason for weak performance.

The most common violation headings

Misleading content is the broadest heading: a promise in the ad with no counterpart on the site, exaggerated outcome claims, guarantees. In health and finance this threshold is noticeably stricter.

Second is site structure judged untrustworthy: no contact details, missing return and privacy pages, an insecure checkout page. Third is restricted categories — health, finance, legal and gambling require additional certification or permission. Fourth is trademark use: naming a competitor’s brand in ad copy is a frequent cause of disapproval.

The order of fixes

First I separate whether the violation comes from the ad copy or the page. If several ads pointing to the same page are disapproved, the problem is most likely the page; if a single ad is disapproved, it is the copy.

If it is page-driven, requesting a re-review before making the fix wastes time. If it is copy-driven, you need to find which phrase caused it — the most practical way is to remove the suspect phrase and test a new variation.

The cost of repeated violations

A single disapproved ad is not a problem. The real risk is the same violation repeating: in accounts accumulating violations, review gets stricter and the process can escalate to account suspension.

So rather than resubmitting a disapproved ad with small edits again and again, you have to genuinely resolve the cause. Rewording the same claim usually produces the same outcome.

How do we start? First I pull every disapproved and limited ad in your account — limited ones are usually overlooked. I group the causes and send the order of fixes in writing. You can reach me from the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a re-review take?

Usually a few days. Simple cases assessed automatically resolve faster; files that go to manual review take longer.

My ad was approved and then disapproved. Why?

Review is not a one-off; when page content changes or a policy is updated, previously approved ads can be re-evaluated. If disapproval follows a change on the site, that is usually the cause.

Can I advertise in a restricted category?

In most restricted categories yes, but additional documents, certification or pre-approval are required. In health and finance these requirements also vary by country; clarifying which document is needed before starting shortens the process.
