Performance Max Ads | PMax Setup and Management
Performance Max is the campaign type that combines all of Google’s ad inventory — Search, Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Display — under a single campaign. The algorithm decides how much budget goes where; you supply the goal, the assets and the signals.
Where its strength is, where its risk is
Its strength is reach: one campaign can catch users across different placements, and as conversion data accumulates it shifts budget toward what works. In accounts with enough data this genuinely performs well.
The risk is transparency. Compared to classic campaigns it is harder to see what each placement returns; a badly built PMax can eat your brand searches and resell you customers who were already coming. That is why I do not launch PMax without separating brand traffic first.
When it is premature
PMax runs on data. If the account has not accumulated meaningful conversions, the algorithm has no signal to learn from and budget is spent diffusely. In new accounts I prefer to build up conversions with Search first and move to PMax afterwards.
The second condition is solid measurement. If conversion tracking is missing or targets the wrong action, PMax becomes the fastest way to burn money, because it reaches all inventory at once.
What a correct setup includes
The asset group is the creative side of the campaign: headlines, descriptions, images, videos and logo. If you upload no video, Google generates one automatically and it rarely suits the brand — supplying your own almost always performs better.
Audience signals give the algorithm a starting direction; they are not targeting, but they speed up learning. Customer lists, site visitors and high-intent custom segments work here. If you sell products, the quality of your Google Shopping feed feeds directly into PMax performance: gaps in titles, categories and images limit the campaign.
What I watch during management
Although search term visibility is limited, the terms PMax appears on can be reported; that is how I check whether it is eating your brand. Asset group performance is reviewed regularly and weak assets are replaced. If the placement report shows irrelevant app and site traffic, an account-level negative placement list comes into play.
How do we start? First I check whether your account is ready for PMax — conversion volume, measurement health and feed quality. If it is not ready, I tell you that first. You can reach me from the contact page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Performance Max eating my Search campaign?
It can. When both your Search campaign and PMax match the same query, priority rules apply and brand traffic can shift to PMax. Separating brand keywords is therefore part of the setup.
Can I choose keywords in a PMax campaign?
No, PMax does not work on keywords. Direction comes from audience signals, assets and the feed. If you want keyword-level control, you need a Search campaign.
Is it suitable for a service business?
It can be, but without a product feed the signal is weaker. For local services, Search and Maps ads usually deliver more predictable results.
