Course Platform Setup | From Udemy to Your Own Site

2 min read29 July 2026

Once your course is ready, you run into this question: should it go on a ready-made marketplace like Udemy, or should it be sold on your own site? Both have upsides and downsides, and since this is a decision that’s hard to reverse later, it’s worth getting right from the start.

I start with platform selection: I give a recommendation based on your target audience, your pricing preference, and how much technical work you want to deal with. Then I set up the chosen platform: payment integration, student enrollment flow, certificates, and other details included.

Ready-Made Marketplace or Your Own Site

Platforms like Udemy offer ready-made traffic and payment infrastructure, but they take a commission and your control over pricing is limited — the platform can apply its own discounts. Your own site gives you full control, but you have to bring the traffic yourself.

The general rule: if your audience is already coming from your own site or social media, your own platform is more profitable. If you don’t have an audience yet and want visibility first, a ready-made marketplace is a reasonable starting point.

What Setup on Your Own Site Includes

Once your own platform is chosen, we pick between WordPress-based course plugins (LMS) or standalone course platforms. During setup, I connect the pieces: payment system (credit card, installment options), the student login panel, lesson progress tracking, and certificate generation.

This setup happens once; after that, adding a new course is as simple as putting content into the existing structure.

Student Flow

The setup isn’t finished where the sale starts. I test every step between a student finding the course, buying it, logging in, and starting the lesson — if there’s a snag somewhere, it needs to be caught before the sale, not after.

How do we start? First, a free 20–30 minute intro call. We talk about what you want and what’s realistic. If it makes sense, I send you the scope and price in writing, then we begin. Reach me through the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell on both Udemy and my own site?

Yes, many instructors do this: Udemy for visibility, their own site for higher margin. Content and pricing strategy need to be set up accordingly.

Which LMS plugin do you recommend?

There’s no fixed recommendation — it depends on your needs: I look at factors like student count, certificate requirements, and budget, and give you a specific recommendation.

Can installment payments be set up?

Yes, most local payment providers support installments, and I can add that during setup.

I already have a course — is switching platforms difficult?

Content can be moved, but student data and sales history stay tied to the platform. Planning the migration together beforehand matters — it’s not a step to rush.
