Digital PR for Visibility in AI Search Results
Digital PR was traditionally treated as a “brand awareness” or “backlink acquisition” job. With the rise of AI search engines, a third benefit has emerged: getting your name mentioned in a news outlet, an industry publication, or a trusted source flags you as an “authority” to the AI models that crawl that source.
I covered this in general terms in the piece on why brand mentions are a stronger GEO signal than backlinks; here I’m focusing specifically on how to achieve this through the PR channel.
Why PR Is Valuable for AI
When AI models assess source credibility, they also look at the publication’s own reputation. A name appearing in an industry publication carries more weight than a sentence you wrote on your own blog — because it’s passed through a third party’s editorial filter. That’s a kind of trust you can’t buy with advertising.
That’s why PR work is a different layer from the “fix your own site” part of a GEO strategy: it’s other people talking about you, not you talking about yourself.
Three Approaches That Actually Work in the Field
Expert-comment requests. Journalists and content editors look for expert opinions on specific topics (platforms similar to HARO, direct relationships with editors). Giving a short, specific, quotable answer to the question asked — not a generic promotional blurb — directly increases your acceptance rate.
Original content built around data. Journalists look for numbers to back up a story. Producing and sharing a small but original finding from your own data (a customer survey, an industry observation, a trend you pulled from your own accounts) gets a far higher acceptance rate than a paid press release.
Press release distribution. The classic method still works, but it’s not enough on its own — what matters is the quality of the distribution list and whether the story actually carries any news value. Releases along the lines of “our company announced X” rarely get picked up; releases that describe a real change or an industry finding do.
I’ll Also Tell You What Doesn’t Work
Paid, low-quality “backlink packages” or mass press-release sites — these are nearly worthless in both classic SEO and GEO. Since AI models also evaluate the source’s own reputation, a mention from a site where anyone can publish anything doesn’t carry the same weight as a mention in an industry publication. Focusing your budget on a small number of real, relevant publications is worth more than appearing in a large number of low-quality ones.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is PR the same thing as brand mentions?
PR is one way to earn brand mentions — not the only one. Brand mentions also come from customer reviews, forums, and social media. PR specifically targets editorial and journalism-sourced mentions.
Is PR realistic for a small business?
National press might not be realistic, but local newspapers, industry publications, and niche blogs are accessible for most businesses. Starting small is better than not starting at all.
How do we measure the result?
Direct traffic isn’t always significant on its own — the real measurement is tracking, through AI brand monitoring, whether your mention rate is changing over time.
