Privacy, plainly.
Your private tasks stay on your device. Google sign-in and Chrome Sync are optional, and you never need a DopaNudge account to use Best New Tab.
Your daily garden
A new seedling starts each local day. Completed small pieces earn 100 points each; the first eight water entries contribute 2 points each. Points grow the flower and side vines and open blossoms. Undoing or removing an entry updates the score. This is not a water intake target. Turn the garden off in Settings → Widgets. Garden progress is calculated only from local records; no score is sent to the developer.
Golden Prompts and languages
Golden Prompts and the interface use bundled text in 22 selectable languages. Copying a prompt only writes it to your clipboard; it does not contact an AI or translation service. New installations ask you to choose a language. Existing language and theme choices are preserved during updates. Eleven preset themes and custom colors are available. These preferences are stored locally and may be included in optional Chrome Sync. The extension does not translate your tasks, bookmarks or other private text.
What is stored on your device
Chrome local storage holds manual link groups, appearance and layout preferences, selected bookmark folder identifiers, daily notes, bigger tasks, small pieces and check marks, the daily water count, timer state, Urge Break rules and cached public developer notes and release information. Private task text, notes and browsing content are not sent to the developer. Optional account event records are described separately below. The web demo has separate browser storage and cannot access extension data or Chrome bookmarks.
Optional Google sign-in
Google sign-in starts only after you choose it. The extension requests Chrome’s optional identity and identity.email permissions and the Google userinfo.email scope. It uses only your email address to show which Google account is connected on this device. The email marker is stored in Chrome’s local extension storage; it is not placed in Chrome Sync or sent to DopaNudge, OguzErol.com or the developer. No name, profile photo, contacts, Google Drive data or Gmail content is requested. The OAuth access token stays in Chrome’s Identity cache and is never written to extension storage.
Optional Chrome Sync
If you explicitly enable it, Chrome Sync can copy supported page settings, layout and manually created link groups through Google’s Chrome Sync infrastructure. Your email, bigger tasks, small steps, notes, activity history, water entries, timer state, browser permissions, connected bookmark-folder identifiers and local-folder access never enter Chrome Sync. The extension does not transmit synced content to DopaNudge, OguzErol.com or the developer. Chrome Sync is not a DopaNudge server backup. If local and synced layouts have both changed, the extension asks which one to keep instead of silently overwriting them. Turning Sync off stops further syncing; Chrome controls retention of data already in your Google account.
Optional DopaNudge account and shared points
This is separate from Google sign-in and Chrome layout Sync. Connecting starts only when you choose Connect DopaNudge account. Chrome requests optional identity permission and access to dopanudge.com, then opens the DopaNudge sign-in flow. The extension keeps an app session token, account identifier and display name in extension-local storage to authenticate this connection and show the connected account.
While connected, eligible small-step completions and explicit Urge Break choices send account event records to https://dopanudge.com/api/account-sync. Records contain account, event and source identifiers, the Chrome platform, event kind, choice and event time. Checkpoint sends an account/event identifier, the selected category and outcome, a 30-second duration and your time zone. They do not include task titles, notes, website addresses, browsing content or measured site time. Server requests also expose ordinary connection metadata to the hosting provider.
Shared account points are separate from the local garden. A small-step completion earns 100 account points, and choosing a task in Urge Break earns 20, under the applicable event rules. A five-minute look earns 1 account point and is available once every two hours. Leave me alone does not deduct points in this extension. Older completed steps are sent only if you explicitly choose to add them to the connected account; this sends identifiers, not task text, and previously awarded steps do not earn twice.
Pending activity and deduplication identifiers remain locally if delivery fails. Disconnect removes the local session and cached balance and attempts to revoke the server session. It stops account syncing but does not delete past account records or the local pending queue; reconnecting the same account may send its pending events. Manage account export and deletion through DopaNudge data controls. The DopaNudge privacy policy applies to that optional account service.
Optional bookmarks access
Bookmark permission is requested when you choose to connect bookmarks or save a manual list to Chrome. Selected Chrome folders appear as live columns. Saving a manual list creates a folder in your chosen location, or reuses a folder with the same name, and adds missing URLs. It does not edit or delete existing Chrome bookmarks. Saving is an explicit action; later changes to your manual list do not automatically sync to Chrome. Chrome handles any browser-level bookmark syncing under your own browser settings. You can disconnect folders and revoke the permission.
Bookmark icons
The optional favicon permission is requested only when you enable website icons in Settings. Chrome’s built-in favicon endpoint then shows icons beside saved links and bookmarks. The extension passes only the public site origin, without private paths, query parameters or fragments. It does not use a third-party favicon service or read or send a browsing-history list. Chrome handles icon resolution under its own browser policies. If the permission is not granted or an icon cannot be displayed, a letter is shown instead.
Your local activity log
Task completion, undo and removal records include the task title, local day, recorded timestamp and time-zone offset. They stay in this browser and can be exported with your JSON backup or as Markdown. Earlier records without a time keep their date without an invented time.
Choose log folder optionally grants access to a folder you select. The directory handle and generated-file baseline are saved only in this device’s IndexedDB, not your JSON backup, Chrome Sync or any server. The extension updates its own best-new-tab-activity.md file while Chrome is running and activity changes. Existing unknown files and external edits are preserved. Chrome may ask you to grant folder permission again after a restart or update. Open log folder previews that file in the extension, not Windows File Explorer. The Markdown log is an activity record, not a complete task backup or restore source. Disconnect requires confirmation and forgets folder access without deleting the file. Reset also disconnects; downloaded or saved files remain until you delete them yourself.
Optional browser columns
With bookmark permission, a starter column displays existing Chrome bookmarks. Most visited sites requests optional topSites access only when you choose it. A snapshot of up to 12 links is kept in Chrome local storage. You may refresh it manually or enable weekly refresh on opening a new tab. Recently visited requests optional history access and reads recent pages from the past 30 days. That list uses a memory-only browser-session cache for up to five minutes so opening new tabs does not repeatedly query history. Removed history entries are cleared from the cache, including when new-tab pages are closed. It is not saved as an extension history archive. Neither list is sent to the developer, included in JSON exports or uploaded through layout sync. Turning a list off clears it and requests removal of its permission.
History and recently closed tabs
The History shortcut opens Chrome history without reading the history database. Reopening the last closed tab or window requests optional sessions permission when clicked. Session information is used for that action, is not saved by the extension and is never sent to the developer. The top service-shortcut artwork is bundled. Bookmark favicons use Chrome’s built-in endpoint as described above; ordinary destination websites open when you follow their links.
Urge Break and website permissions
Urge Break pauses a chosen site with a Before you scroll screen showing your own tasks. When you enable a site, Chrome requests optional scripting and access to that site. Chrome describes this as reading and changing site data because the extension inserts the pause screen into the page. It does not collect the page text, posts, messages or passwords. Your tasks appear inside a protected extension frame; they are not inserted into the website’s readable page content or sent to the site.
For a single-page rule, Chrome still grants access at the website level; the extension limits the reminder to your chosen path. Continue applies to the current visit, while a five-minute look pauses reminders for that site across tabs and is available once every two hours. The time of the last look and reminder state are stored on your device. You can remove a site or revoke its permission in Chrome. Choosing a task opens a preparation page in the same tab. Its selected task and countdown remain in extension session storage. Start now becomes available after 30 seconds and closes only that tab. The task is not marked complete. Optional account point events are described above.
Daily time on chosen sites
For sites where you enable Urge Break, the extension estimates today’s active browsing time while the site tab and Chrome window are active. Time with the pause screen open and long gaps such as sleep are excluded. Sampling is approximate. Local storage holds only the current local day, site host and accumulated time; a session cursor tracks the active tab and sample time. A new local day starts a new total. These records are not sent to DopaNudge, included in JSON backups or copied through Chrome Sync. No history permission is needed for this measurement; the separate optional Recently visited feature uses history as described above.
Developer notes and network requests
Two footer columns sit at the bottom of the screen. The extension requests public text from https://oguzerol.com/my-start-page/developer/notes.json and uses bundled or cached notes when unavailable. Only fixed DopaNudge and OguzErol.com links are allowed. Notes are plain text and cannot execute code.
At most once every 24 hours, a background request to https://oguzerol.com/my-start-page/release.json checks a public version and a validated Chrome Web Store link. The request sends no installed version, links, bookmarks, tasks, notes, preferences, account identifiers, cookies or referrer. The same exclusions apply to developer-note requests. The server and hosting provider necessarily receive IP address, request time and ordinary connection/security metadata. This is not a claim of zero network data.
Notes are not personalised using browser data. There is no analytics SDK, tracking pixel, remote executable code or automatic installer. Chrome manages extension updates.
A personal note from Oğuz
I have absolutely no interest in your personal data. I mean that sincerely. If this little tool helps you, that will make me very happy. Your private tasks, notes and browsing content are not sent to me.
When you follow a link
A destination website receives a normal visit and applies its own privacy policy, including its own cookie and analytics choices. This also applies to DopaNudge and the developer website.
Export, delete and retention
Your JSON backup includes manual links, tasks, notes, water count and preferences. Keep it private. Importing replaces the saved setup; bookmark folders need to be connected again, and site permissions are not transferred by a backup. Reset clears the extension’s setup and Urge Break rules without deleting Chrome bookmarks. Uninstalling removes extension-local data. Clear site data to remove demo data. Resetting the workspace does not delete a connected DopaNudge account, its server records or the account-event queue. Disconnect the account separately to stop syncing, and use DopaNudge data controls to export or delete server-held account records. The workspace JSON backup does not include account credentials, pending account events or site-time measurements.
Limited Use compliance
Best New Tab complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including Limited Use requirements. User data is used only for the disclosed features. It is not sold, used for personalised advertising or creditworthiness, or transferred for unrelated purposes. The developer cannot access your locally stored private content. Hosting providers process ordinary connection information needed to deliver and secure the public endpoints.
