# Budget Optimisation | Allocating Spend Correctly

[Oğuz Erol](https://oguzerol.com/en/about-me/) | 3 min read

Budget optimisation is the way to grow results without changing total spend: shifting money to the campaign that works and cutting the one that does not. In most accounts the budget is set once and never revisited for months.

## Where budget gets stuck

The first place to look is campaigns running out of budget. If a campaign hits its daily budget early in the day, no ads run for the rest of it and you are invisible while demand exists. Google shows this in the interface, but without regular checks it goes unnoticed.

The reverse is common too: campaigns that never spend their budget. There the problem is not budget but bids or narrow targeting — raising the budget changes nothing.

## Distribution across campaigns

The right measure for distribution is not how much a campaign spends but what its results cost. A campaign with cost per conversion below target that is still hitting its budget cap is where budget belongs. A campaign running far above target cost should be cut.

When making this comparison, remember campaigns do not all do the same job. A brand campaign naturally produces the cheapest conversions; judging it against a new-customer campaign and shifting budget to brand every time stops growth.

## Daily budget versus actual spend

Google can exceed your daily budget on some days and spend below it on others; the balance is struck within the billing period. So panicking over a single day’s spend produces bad decisions.

If you plan monthly, calculate the daily budget from your month-end goal and monitor spend weekly. Budget running out in the final days of the month and campaigns stopping causes real loss in seasonal businesses.

## The cost of frequent budget changes

In campaigns using smart bidding, frequent and large budget swings disrupt learning; the campaign keeps re-tuning and performance fluctuates. Making changes gradually gets the same result without the swings.

Before a seasonal peak, raising budget in a few steps rather than all at once lets the algorithm adapt. The same applies on the way down.

## Before growing the budget

A budget increase is the most expensive way to grow while waste still exists in the account. If you first do [negative keyword](https://oguzerol.com/en/negative-keyword-management/) cleanup, [Quality Score](https://oguzerol.com/en/what-is-quality-score/) improvement and [conversion rate](https://oguzerol.com/en/conversion-optimization/) fixes, the same budget does more work. The increase makes sense after that.

**How do we start?** First I map spend and results per campaign: which is hitting its cap, which is burning money. I send the reallocation plan in writing. You can reach me from the [contact page](https://oguzerol.com/en/contact/).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Should I use a shared budget?

It can be practical across very similar campaigns, but it reduces control: managing how much each campaign spends becomes harder. For campaigns serving different goals, separate budgets are healthier.

### How often should I review budget?

Weekly is enough in a settled account. A newly built or seasonally volatile account needs more frequent checks. What matters is less the frequency than that the review is based on a measure.

### Does pausing a campaign protect the budget?

Short term yes, but in campaigns using smart bidding, pausing and restarting resets the learning process. For temporary restrictions, lowering the budget usually does less damage than pausing.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

## How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your business and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on **a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours** and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend leaves a lasting result in your business. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

## Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
