# Why Are My Google Ads Not Showing | Diagnosis

## Quick summary

Is your ad genuinely not serving, or serving while you just can't see it? Tell the two apart first, then check the common causes in order, quickest first.

First check this: does the ad show more than zero impressions in your account? If it does, the ad is serving and you just don’t see it in your own searches; that is normal, and the “don’t test with your own search” section below is for you. If impressions are zero, the ad genuinely isn’t serving and the cause is most likely in the list below, ordered from the most common and quickest to check.

## Don’t test with your own search

Searching for your own ad is common but unreliable: results vary with your location, search history and the specific auction at that moment. Google’s help page recommends the Ad preview and diagnosis tool instead; using it prevents impressions from accumulating and performance stats from being affected ([Google Ads Help, as of October 2026](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/148778?hl=en)).

The tool is under Tools, in Troubleshooting. You enter the keyword, location, language and device, and it tells you why the ad isn’t showing for that search. It has limits: it simulates a search and may not reflect the whole live auction, and the tool not showing the ad doesn’t mean it never served, so also look at impressions and clicks. If the result is “Reason unknown,” Google points to two things: a learning period if you recently changed the bid strategy, and a keyword with low search volume or no Quality Score ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7378077?hl=en)).

## 1. Statuses: paused or removed?

Even when the campaign is enabled, the ad group or the ad itself may be paused. According to Google, ads that are Paused or Removed don’t serve. Check the status of the campaign, ad group and ad separately. It takes a minute, so it’s the first place to look.

## 2. Payment and account

According to Google, ads don’t serve until valid billing information is submitted and the account is active. If a card has expired, a payment was declined or verification isn’t complete, serving stops. If the account is suspended (for billing verification or security reasons), ads don’t serve and the account status has to be fixed first. It’s quick to fix but costs days of lost serving if unnoticed.

## 3. Ad approval

According to Google’s ad review page ([as of October 2026](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722120?hl=en)):

- Most ads are reviewed within one business day; complex reviews can take longer.
- During review the status shows as under review; an ad that passes becomes Eligible and starts running. If it’s Eligible but not running, check whether its campaign is paused.
- An ad that violates a policy is Disapproved and can’t show anywhere; you’re notified of the violation and your options. You can fix the ad or appeal.
- If an ad has been under review for more than 2 full business days, check its status; beyond a week, contact Google Ads support.

## 4. Budget

If the budget is limited, ads may not serve effectively ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7378077?hl=en)). If a campaign hits its daily budget early, the ad can appear in the morning and vanish by afternoon; this is one of the common causes of “sometimes it shows, sometimes it doesn’t”. Check the daily budget and the time of day it gets spent.

## 5. Bid strategy status

Look at the status of the bid strategy. Google’s page mentions the statuses Not eligible, Learning, Limited and Misconfigured. If you just changed the bid strategy or goal, the campaign may stay in Learning for a while; avoid frequent changes meanwhile.

## 6. Ad rank: bid and Quality Score

According to Google, your ad rank is determined by your Quality Score and the maximum cost-per-click bid you set; if the rank isn’t high enough, the ad may not show on the first page. The fix isn’t always a higher bid: improving relevance, ad copy and landing page experience can get the same position more cheaply. See [Quality Score](https://oguzerol.com/en/what-is-quality-score/) for detail. If a competitor shows and you don’t, [auction insights](https://oguzerol.com/en/auction-insights/) shows your relative position.

## 7. Keywords: search volume, match type, negatives

- **Low search volume.** Google tells you to look for the “Low search volume” status on keywords. This is normal for very narrow, very specific terms; add a common equivalent or a broader match type.
- **Match type too narrow.** Exact match serves only on very close searches; people may search for the term differently from how you wrote it. Check the search terms report to see real searches.
- **A negative keyword conflict.** A negative keyword you added at account or campaign level may also block a search you want. Look at recently added negatives in the change history.

## 8. Targeting: location, schedule, device, audience, language

When location, schedule, device and audience settings combine, the reachable audience can shrink much further than expected. An ad doesn’t show for searches made outside the targeted location, and an ad schedule can limit serving too. Check location exclusions and the ad schedule. If you added an audience as “targeting,” reach narrows considerably; if you only want to observe, add it as “observation.”

**Language:** on Google Search, language is judged from the search term’s language, the user’s language settings and preferences. According to Google’s page ([as of October 2026](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722078?hl=en)), from September 2026 the campaign-level language setting is being removed for Search campaigns and ads are matched by the language of your ads; no action is required from advertisers. If your ad copy doesn’t match the language of the search, this can matter.

## 9. Changes you made recently

If the ad showed one day and not the next, look at recent changes: budget, bid strategy, negative keywords, location narrowing. The change history shows what you changed and when.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Where is the ad preview tool?

In Google Ads, under Tools, in Troubleshooting: “Ad preview and diagnosis.” It shows why the ad isn’t serving for a specific keyword, location, language and device.

### My competitor shows up but I don’t. Why?

In the same auction their bid and Quality Score together may be outranking yours. You can see your position in auction insights.

### How long until a new campaign starts serving?

According to Google, ads are mostly reviewed within one business day. If it takes longer than 2 full business days, check the status; beyond a week, contact Google Ads support.

### My ad shows as Eligible but doesn’t appear. Why?

Eligible means the ad passed review, not that it’s serving. Check whether the campaign or ad group is paused, then the budget, targeting and bid status.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

## How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your business and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on **a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours** and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend leaves a lasting result in your business. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

## Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
