# My Website Is Very Slow

## Quick summary

If your site is slow you don't have to guess why — it's measurable. The five most common causes, how to tell which one is yours, and the order to fix them.

“My site is slow” isn’t a diagnosis on its own, and any fix applied before you know where the slowness lives is guesswork. The good news: this is measurable, and measuring it is free.

## Measure first, touch second

PageSpeed Insights takes your address and shows two different things: a lab test and real user data. The second matters more — that’s what your actual visitors experience.

Three values to read:

- **LCP** — how long the main content takes to appear. Most of the “it feels slow” sensation lives here.
- **CLS** — content jumping around while the page loads. Not slowness, but just as irritating.
- **INP** — how long the site takes to respond when you tap something.

Optimising without knowing which of these is bad is giving the right medicine for the wrong illness.

## The five most common causes

**1. Uncompressed images.** The most common cause and the easiest fix. A photo taken on a phone and uploaded directly can be several megabytes; the same image as WebP at the right dimensions can shrink by ninety per cent.

**2. Plugin accumulation.** Every plugin loads its own CSS and JavaScript on every page — even pages that don’t use it. Plugins that piled up over the years and are no longer used quietly add weight.

**3. No caching.** Without a cache, the page is built from scratch for every visitor. A properly configured cache layer is a big win on most WordPress sites, but it hides root causes such as server or plugin load, so I set it up after fixing those.

**4. The server.** On cheap shared hosting, the server’s first response can take seconds by itself. In that case the ceiling stays low no matter what you do on the site side.

**5. Page builder markup.** Elementor and similar tools give you flexibility, but the nested box structure they produce gives the browser extra work. Not a disaster on its own — but combined with the other four, the total gets heavy.

## The right order

Take these in sequence rather than at random, or you’ll never know which one helped:

1. Images — biggest win, lowest risk
2. Server and database assessment — this sets the ceiling for the first response time
3. Removing unused plugins
4. Caching — after the root causes are fixed; otherwise it hides the problem and muddies later measurements
5. Template or theme level work (and CDN) — the riskiest, so last

Measure again after each step. Change five things at once and you’ll never know which one worked.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does speed really affect SEO?

Yes, but less than it’s made out to. Speed separates two pages of equal quality; it won’t rescue weak content. Its real effect is reducing the number of visitors who give up and leave.

### Is installing a speed plugin enough?

Usually not, and sometimes it hurts. Two plugins doing the same job can break each other. A caching plugin is necessary but not sufficient.

### Is e-commerce different?

Yes — cart and account pages can’t be cached, so the setup is more involved. [WooCommerce speed optimisation](https://oguzerol.com/en/wordpress-speed-optimization/) covers that separately.

### My site is slower on mobile, is that normal?

Some difference is expected, but a wide gap means there’s a problem. Mobile processors are weaker, so JavaScript weight is punished harder there.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

## How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your business and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on **a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours** and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend leaves a lasting result in your business. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

## Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
