# GA4 E-Commerce Setup | Making the Funnel Visible

[Oğuz Erol](https://oguzerol.com/en/about-me/) | 3 min read

GA4’s e-commerce tracking records every step from a user seeing a product to buying it. Set up correctly it shows at a glance where you lose customers; set up incompletely you are left with a total sales count and nothing else.

## The steps of the funnel

The measured chain runs like this: product list viewed, product clicked, product page viewed, added to cart, checkout started, purchase completed. Each step is sent as a separate event.

The value of that chain is showing the breaking point. If add-to-cart is high but checkout starts are low, the problem is shipping or payment options; if checkout starts are high but purchases are low, the problem is the payment page. A setup that only measures purchases cannot make that distinction.

## Data layer structure

E-commerce events must carry product information in a specific shape: product ID, name, category, price and quantity. That structure arrives through the [Tag Manager](https://oguzerol.com/en/google-tag-manager-setup/) data layer.

It is critical that the product ID matches the ID in your [Merchant Center](https://oguzerol.com/en/merchant-center-management/) feed. If they differ, [dynamic remarketing](https://oguzerol.com/en/dynamic-remarketing/) does not work: the product a user viewed cannot be shown back to them because the two systems know it by different names.

## Common mistakes

First, not sending currency. Amounts are then interpreted in a default currency and reports come out meaningless.

Second, sending value inconsistently: tax included in some events, excluded in others. Third, never setting up remove-from-cart and refund events — without those the funnel only shows the forward direction.

Fourth, and most insidious, losing the source because of the payment provider. A user who leaves to pay and returns is counted as a new session and the sale is recorded as direct traffic. I always check that setting on the [e-commerce conversion tracking](https://oguzerol.com/en/e-commerce-conversion-tracking/) side.

## Connecting it to advertising

Once setup is complete this data becomes a decision tool, not just a report. People who add to cart without buying turn into a [remarketing](https://oguzerol.com/en/remarketing-ads/) audience; product-level performance becomes the basis for differentiated bidding in [shopping campaigns](https://oguzerol.com/en/google-shopping-optimization/).

**How do we start?** First I test your existing e-commerce setup: which steps are measured, whether product IDs match the feed, whether the source is lost. I send the findings in writing. You can reach me from the [contact page](https://oguzerol.com/en/contact/).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is a plugin setup enough?

It usually covers the basic events, but product ID matching and the payment provider setting normally need manual checking. Do not treat an untested setup as sufficient.

### Do I have to measure every funnel step?

Not every one, but you need at least add-to-cart and purchase. The more intermediate steps you add, the better you can see where people drop out.

### Why measure remove-from-cart?

It shows which products go into carts and come back out. When that rate is high for a specific product, the cause is usually price, shipping or delivery time.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

## How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your business and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on **a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours** and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend leaves a lasting result in your business. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

## Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
