# Claude Skills I Actually Use as a Consultant

[Oğuz Erol](https://oguzerol.com/en/about-me/) | 6 min read | Published: 3 August 2026

## Quick summary

Weekly Google Ads reports, GA4 summaries, SEO tone control, and backup discipline — four real Claude Skills examples I actually use in my consulting work.

Claude’s Skills feature offers packaged capabilities, defined by SKILL.md files, that carry out repeated tasks at the same quality every single time. I don’t treat this as an abstract concept in my consulting work — I use it as four concrete tools I run every single week: a standardized Google Ads report, a fixed-template GA4 summary, a check that keeps brand voice consistent in SEO content, and the discipline of taking a backup before making any change to a live system. In this post I walk through each one with how I actually use it and real examples.

## Locking a Single Format for the Weekly Google Ads Report

Managing my Google Ads accounts on my own, I run into the same question every week: how did spend, conversions, and cost change in this account compared to last week? Instead of writing the answer from scratch every time, I use a skill that fixes the structure of the report — which headings it will have, which metric falling below which threshold gets flagged with an “attention” tag, and in what order campaigns get listed are all defined up front.

When I run the skill, the output comes back with the same skeleton for every account; only the numbers change. It might look like it’s doing the same job as a thirty-second “prepare a report for this account” request, but the real difference is in the discipline: if I wrote the same instructions by hand every time, by the third week I’d forget a heading or interpret a threshold differently. The skill locks that down.

## Summarizing GA4 Data With the Same Template

There’s a similar trap on the GA4 side: summarizing the same property’s data one week by channel breakdown, the next by device breakdown, and another week with some random chart. The GA4 skill I use locks down the shape of the output — first the key events (things already defined in GA4 like `clicked_phone`, `clicked_whatsapp`), then channel-level traffic change, then the top-traffic pages, and finally the percentage change against the previous period.

The skill also prevents a small but annoying mistake: reporting a one-day traffic spike (usually a bot or a campaign test) as organic growth. That rule is written into the skill itself; I don’t have to remember it every time.

## Not Losing Brand Voice in SEO Content

The real risk when writing content isn’t wrong information — it’s tone. First person, concrete numbers, no exaggeration — all three need to hold up as well in a piece’s thirty-fourth paragraph as in its first.

The SEO content skill I use automatically filters out certain patterns while writing: number-free praise like “industry leader” or “best solution”; exaggerated words like “unique” or “revolutionary”; and any attempt to name-drop a client (this is where the “only numbers can be published” rule comes from). The skill doesn’t make a piece perfect in one pass — but it strips out most of the patterns I’d otherwise have to hunt down one by one in the first draft.

## Backup Discipline Before Any Change to a Live System

This isn’t the skill that saves the most time — but it’s the one that costs the most if it gets skipped even once. Before making any write operation on a live WordPress site: take a git snapshot, export a database backup, verify the target server and database, and state the change and the rollback path in writing.

Under time pressure, any one of these steps can easily get skipped — you might think “it’s a small change, no need for a backup.” The skill turns this from a choice into a gate: no write operation happens until these steps are complete. Manually remembering this discipline every single time across twelve different sites isn’t realistic.

## An Observation From the Field: When to Use a Skill, When a Simple Prompt Will Do

There’s a simple test for whether a task is worth turning into a skill: if I’m writing the same instruction for the third time, that’s a signal. The weekly report, the GA4 summary, and backup discipline cleared this bar easily — they repeat more than once a week, sometimes more than once a day. But honestly, not every repeated task deserves to become a skill.

Building a skill for something I only do once a month, where the context changes every time, doesn’t pay for the setup and maintenance cost — a plain prompt is enough there, and even faster. A skill’s cost isn’t zero: you have to write the SKILL.md file, test edge cases, and keep it up to date over time (I covered this process in detail on [How to Write a SKILL.md](https://oguzerol.com/en/how-to-write-skill-md/)). Only genuinely repeated work pays back that investment. For a broader framework, see the [Agentic AI Guide](https://oguzerol.com/en/agentic-ai-guide/) hub page.

## You Can Ask Me for This Work

If your own work has a weekly report, a regular data summary, or a task that repeats in a fixed format, I can turn it into a Claude Skill and set it up for you. Typically 2 hours to 2 weeks of work, remote, billed hourly. For broader AI consulting scope, check out the [Your Own AI Assistant](https://oguzerol.com/en/your-own-ai-assistant/) page.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What exactly is Claude Skills?

Claude Skills is a capability package defined by a SKILL.md file that predetermines the steps, format, and rules for how a specific task will be done. The difference from a normal prompt is that the instruction is permanent and reusable, not one-off. For more detail, see [What Is Claude Skills](https://oguzerol.com/en/what-is-claude-skills-what-is-it-for/).

### How long does it take to write a skill?

A simple skill (single format, a few rules) can be written and tested in an hour or two. A skill involving multiple steps and approval points, like backup discipline, can take a few days, because edge cases (wrong server, missing backup) need to be tested.

### What kind of work do skills make the biggest difference on?

They make the biggest difference on weekly or daily repeated work that requires format and rules: report generation, data summaries, content review, checklists before making a live-system change. On one-off tasks or ones where the context keeps changing, the payoff is limited.

### Does using a skill remove human oversight?

No. A skill standardizes the output, but the approval step — especially for live-system changes — is written into the skill itself. In other words, the skill isn’t there to skip a human’s approval, it’s there to make sure the approval is never forgotten at the right moment.
