# ChatGPT Changed Its Source Selection: The Bing Layer and What to Do

[Oğuz Erol](https://oguzerol.com/en/about-me/) | 5 min read | Published: 3 August 2026

## Quick summary

ChatGPT's search leans heavily on Bing's index — a site Bing never crawls may never show up in ChatGPT's answers. Here's what you can fix today.

When ChatGPT’s search feature is on, the answers it gives largely rely on Microsoft Bing’s search infrastructure and index — not Google’s. That means if you want to show up in ChatGPT’s answers, you need to be indexed and well-positioned not just on Google, but on Bing too. This is something most businesses overlook — since Bing’s market share is low, nobody bothers checking Bing Webmaster Tools, myself included for a long time; in this piece I explain what determines ChatGPT’s source selection and what concrete steps you can take today.

## Why the Bing Layer Matters

When ChatGPT does a search, it pulls results largely from Bing’s index rather than one it’s built itself. This technical partnership underpins ChatGPT’s real-time search answers: when a user asks a question, the model scans Bing’s search results, picks the most relevant pages, and builds its answer citing them.

The result: a page might rank perfectly on Google — first position, featured snippet, whatever you want — but if that same page is never indexed on Bing, or is poorly positioned there, it may never appear in ChatGPT’s answer at all. An SEO strategy optimized purely for Google is no longer enough on its own for ChatGPT visibility. I go into this distinction in more depth on the [How Your Website Shows Up in ChatGPT](https://oguzerol.com/en/how-your-website-shows-up-in-chatgpt/) page, in a broader framing.

## Concrete Steps You Can Take Today

Taking the Bing layer seriously doesn’t require a complex strategy — there are a few basic steps most businesses have never done:

1. **Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools.** It’s Google Search Console’s Bing counterpart, and it’s entirely free. Most businesses have never done this, simply because nobody remembers to.
2. **Submit your sitemap to Bing too.** Upload the same sitemap file you submitted to Google Search Console to Bing Webmaster Tools as well — no need to prepare a separate file.
3. **Use Bing’s IndexNow protocol.** This protocol, developed by Bing itself, instantly notifies Bing (and other engines that use it) when a page is updated, instead of waiting for Bing to crawl it again on its own.
4. **Compare your Bing and Google rankings.** If there’s a big gap between the two engines for the same keyword — say you’re on the first page on Google but nowhere on Bing — that’s a warning sign worth looking at right away.

None of these steps takes hours; the hard part is just remembering to check Bing at all.

## An Observation From My Own Operation

When I carefully went through Bing Webmaster Tools across the portfolio of sites I regularly monitor, what I found was instructive: on one of the sites I manage, a service page ranking on the first page — even near the top — for its main keyword on Google didn’t show up anywhere on Bing for the same query, because the page had never been indexed by Bing at all. The site had been live for years and the Google side was in great shape; nobody had ever checked the Bing side. After submitting the sitemap to Bing and setting up IndexNow, the page started appearing in Bing’s index within a few weeks. I can’t share the number, but the difference was visibly significant — and this wasn’t a one-off coincidence on a single site; I’ve seen the same gap on other sites in the portfolio I manage.

## Will This Keep Being the Case?

Honestly: today’s Bing dependency might not be permanent. Which search infrastructure AI search engines use can change over time — ChatGPT could grow its own index tomorrow, partner with a different provider, or deepen its current partnership. It would be wrong to present this as a settled fact.

So my recommendation isn’t “focus only on Bing” — it’s don’t neglect basic visibility across multiple search engines. Bing is behind ChatGPT today; tomorrow another engine could be behind another AI tool. Regularly checking [AI bots’ (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot) access to your site](https://oguzerol.com/en/ai-bots/) is part of the same logic — tracking which engine feeds which AI tool is a more resilient strategy than optimizing for a single platform.

## You Can Ask Me for This Work

You can ask me for this work: it’s remote, hourly-billed work that typically takes 2 hours to 2 weeks — including Bing Webmaster Tools setup, sitemap and IndexNow integration, a Google/Bing comparison, and a general AI search visibility audit. For a comprehensive visibility engagement, check out my [AI Search Visibility](https://oguzerol.com/en/ai-search-visibility-geo-aeo/) service, or read the [GEO Guide](https://oguzerol.com/en/geo-guide/) for the general framework.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does ChatGPT really use Bing, or does it have its own search engine?

The web-based answers ChatGPT gives when its search feature is on rely heavily on Microsoft Bing’s search infrastructure. The partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft is the technical basis for this; ChatGPT doesn’t operate an independent web index of its own.

### Is registering with Bing Webmaster Tools paid?

No, it’s completely free. You follow the same steps you use to verify a site and submit a sitemap on Google Search Console — it’s a matter of minutes on Bing Webmaster Tools too.

### I rank well on Google — will I automatically rank well on Bing too?

No, not automatically. Bing has its own crawling and indexing process; a page can look perfect on Google while never being visited by Bing, or being poorly indexed there. You need to check the two engines separately.

### Does setting up IndexNow require technical knowledge?

Not at a basic level — most WordPress plugins and CDN providers (including Cloudflare) offer one-click IndexNow integration. If you need a custom setup, that’s one of the things I do.
