# Where to Hire AI Work: Marketplace, Agency, or Expert?

## Quick summary

Where to hire AI work: platform, agency or independent expert. A decision table by job size and a checklist for vetting whoever sends you a quote.

For a small, clearly defined, one-off job use a freelance platform (Upwork, Fiverr and similar); for a mid-sized job with a clear scope, an independent expert; for large, ongoing, multi-channel work, an agency. The harder question comes after the channel: how do you tell whether the person quoting can actually do the work? Below is a decision table, then a checklist you can apply whichever channel you pick. I am an independent consultant myself, so read this with that in mind.

## Which job goes through which channel?

| Type of work | Suitable channel | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small, standard, one-off (a prompt set, a simple chatbot, a single automation test) | Freelance platform | You see several quotes on one screen and can start within hours |
| Mid-sized with a clear scope (an AI integration, a campaign setup, an audit) | Independent expert | You talk directly to the person doing the work, no middle layer |
| Large, ongoing, multi-channel (managing several platforms at once, continuous support) | Agency | When one person is away, someone else carries on |

An agency generally costs more, and communication often runs through an account manager. An independent expert has no backup: if they fall ill or get busy, the work stops. On a platform, quality control is yours. For a closer comparison of agency versus independent, see [AI consultant or agency](https://oguzerol.com/en/ai-consultant-or-agency/).

## How do you vet whoever sends the quote?

Whatever the channel, these six questions work:

1. **Can they show a similar, finished job?** A screenshot or a live system; ideally a reference you can talk to. “I am experienced” is not evidence.
2. **Do they say where they would start and where it could go wrong?** A good quote names the first step and the risk. A quote that only says “we will do it with ChatGPT” has no process.
3. **Is the scope in writing?** What is delivered, what counts as “done”, how changes are requested. If three quotes are close in price but differ in scope, price is not what you are comparing.
4. **Will they accept a small paid test task?** A few hours of real work before the big contract shows what working with that person will be like.
5. **Will you own the accounts, keys and files at the end?** In AI setups, API keys, account access and scripts often stay with whoever built them. Have accounts opened in your name and never give broader access than needed.
6. **Do they tell you which tools and models are used and where your data goes?** If the work touches customer lists or invoices, ask this upfront.

Signs to avoid: guaranteed results, an unusually low quote, a request for your admin password, or pushing the conversation off the platform. Pay in stages where you can, and use the platform’s own payment and dispute route, because that protection ends when you leave the platform. Protection differs by platform, so before signing, read the platform’s own help pages on how payments are held and how disputes are handled to judge whether it is reputable.

## An AI app builder or an expert?

For a personal or one-use job (a small tool that tidies your own spreadsheet), an AI app builder is often enough and you do not need an expert’s budget. The need for an expert starts where the work touches customer data, talks to other systems, or has to keep running: who can see what, what happens when something fails, who maintains it in a few months. This is not a rule, just the line I draw.

## An example

A client was stuck between three quotes from a platform; prices were close but the scope was written differently in each. When I saw the job was really a mid-sized integration with a clear scope, I suggested getting a quote directly from an expert instead of the platform; once the job’s definition became clear, so did the price. The reverse happens too: some requests I get are as small as a single automation setup, and I tell those people to get a quick quote from a platform.

## Working with me

If your need turns out to be a mid-sized job with a clear scope, you can write through the [AI Consulting](https://oguzerol.com/en/ai-consulting/) page; for cost expectations I also wrote up [consulting rates](https://oguzerol.com/en/ai-consulting-rates/). The first conversation is paid. If a small job belongs on a platform or a large ongoing one with an agency, I will say so.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which AI visibility platform is best for agencies?

This page is about hiring people. If you are choosing software that tracks how your brand appears in AI search answers, look at which platforms, languages and frequency the tool uses for the same question set. I describe the method in [how to measure AI visibility](https://oguzerol.com/en/how-to-measure-ai-visibility/).

### Which is cheaper, an agency or an independent expert?

Generally the independent expert, since there is no account-management or office layer. On large work an agency’s extra capacity can close that gap; it depends on the size and continuity of the job.

### How do I protect quality on a platform?

The platform does not guarantee quality; it lets you make the choice. Ask the six questions above and give a small paid test task. As the work grows, moving to an independent expert can be safer.
