It should also identify the product or batch, the acceptance range used and the person responsible for evaluating the result. I build an inspection application that keeps those elements together, with a clear route for exceptions. The application does not invent product acceptance criteria. Your authorised specifications and decision rules provide the basis; I translate them into entry screens and checks. A reading outside a limit is not automatically a decision to scrap a batch. ## Example: A measurement of 10.4 mm The fictional illustration uses batch **B-104**. The target dimension is **10.0 mm**, with an acceptance range of **9.8–10.2 mm**. The measured result is **10.4 mm**. Because it exceeds the upper limit, the record is flagged and the batch placed under review. These figures are illustrative, not a real product specification or production result. The screen shows both the observation and its applicable range. A reviewer sees the reason for the exception rather than only a red badge. If a repeat measurement is needed, its result is linked separately instead of overwriting the first reading. Any subsequent correction, reinspection or disposition includes the responsible person’s decision and reason. ## Separate data entry from the decision Units must be explicit: millimetres and centimetres should not enter an ambiguous shared field. I adapt decimal entry to the users and do not treat a blank result as zero. Whether a reading exactly on a boundary is accepted follows the written rule; the illustrated range includes its endpoints. When a specification changes, the new tolerance should not silently reassess historical records. Each observation retains the version used to evaluate it. Several samples or measurement points within one batch remain separate entries. Your quality owner defines how their results affect the overall batch decision. ## When Excel or an existing quality tool is enough A measurement table with conditional formatting may suit a small process. If an existing quality application already supports the necessary review, replacing it may add little value. Custom development helps when product-specific criteria, batch relationships, repeated observations and authorised decisions must work together. Any production or shipment hold is a separate scope item. ## Making the scope testable I start with a de-identified example of your current file or screen and the roles of the people using it. The written scope defines where each field comes from, who can change it and where the result goes. I test 9.8 mm, 10.2 mm, 10.4 mm and a blank value. Changing the specification version must not silently rewrite the earlier evaluation of B-104. The scope also covers exports, the backup approach and who handles failures. We review the first version against one real workflow before planning further connections. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### Does an out-of-range result automatically scrap the batch? No. The illustrated workflow sends it for review. The next step follows the authorised person’s decision and the agreed approval process. The software does not replace specialist judgement. ### Can a typing error be corrected? An authorised correction flow can retain the original value, revised value and reason. Correcting an entry should remain distinguishable from taking a genuinely new measurement. ### Can readings come directly from an instrument? I assess the instrument’s supported output and access method.
