# Google Ads Consulting

[Oğuz Erol](https://oguzerol.com/en/about-me/) | 8 min read

## What does Google Ads consulting mean?

If you don’t want to hand your Google Ads account over to an agency, but you’re not confident managing it entirely on your own either, what you’re looking for is consulting. With an agency, you hand your account to someone else; in consulting, the account stays with you, and I review it and tell you, with reasoning, what needs to be done.

I’ve been managing Google Ads for 20 years. Part of consulting is not building campaigns at all, but showing you or your team how to read the account so you can make the decisions yourselves.

## The difference between consulting and agency management

| | Agency management | Consulting |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who does the day-to-day work | The agency: builds campaigns, allocates budget, writes reports | You or your team; I review the account at set intervals and give recommendations |
| Control of the account | Often through the agency’s manager account | Fully with you |
| Where the knowledge builds up | At the agency | With you and your team |
| Time needed from you | Little | Someone has to implement the advice |
| If you leave | You often start from zero | The account and its history are already yours |

If you already have someone in-house handling ads, consulting is far more efficient; that person develops fast. If nobody will implement the advice, consulting stays on paper.

## What consulting covers

A typical consulting relationship includes: an audit of the account’s current state, restructuring the campaign architecture, verifying conversion tracking, choosing a bid strategy, search term and [negative keyword](https://oguzerol.com/en/negative-keyword-management/) discipline, and feedback on creative and landing pages.

These are the problems I see often in account audits: setting a smart bidding goal on a conversion that is not a real one, such as a page view; lumping all site visitors into one audience and showing them the same ad; running ads in hours when nobody answers the phone; launching campaigns before tracking is set up. Those four are always checked.

We define the scope in writing upfront. I don’t say “I’ll look at everything” — which topics, at what frequency, with what output, is made clear from the start. That way neither of us sets the wrong expectation.

Ideal Client Profile

## Businesses I Enjoy Working With

Long-term, data-driven growth goals, open to continuous optimization.

### E-commerce Businesses

Online stores with a wide product range, focused on cart-abandonment campaigns and strong return-on-ad-spend targets.

### Professional Services

Law firms, consulting firms, accounting practices, architecture firms, and other professional service providers.

### Local Businesses

Multi-location or franchise-model local service providers with regional expansion goals.

### Tourism/Hospitality

Businesses focused on seasonal campaign management, boosting direct bookings, and reducing dependence on OTAs.

## Who it’s for, and who it isn’t

**A good fit:** businesses that put a regular budget into ads and have someone to implement the advice. That person can be an employee or it can be you; what matters is that the recommendations actually get carried out.

**Not a good fit:** situations where nobody can pay attention to the ads and you need someone to simply “take care of it” — that calls for management, not consulting. Also, if tracking is not set up yet and you do not know what visitors do on your site, tracking comes first; we can do that inside consulting too.

If you’re not sure which one you need, we work it out together in the first conversation. Selling you a model that doesn’t fit helps no one.

## Questions to ask any consultant or agency

These are my own criteria; you can ask them of whoever you work with:

1. **Whose name will the ad account be under?** You should be the account’s full owner; the consultant or agency is added as an authorized user. If the account is built inside an agency’s own manager structure, you may lose access to the campaign history when you leave.
2. **Where is the ad budget spent from?** Payment that comes from your account and that you can see makes it easier to keep an eye on spend.
3. **Can you reach the raw data?** You should be able to look at the account itself, not only a presentation of selected metrics.
4. **Is tracking the first job?** Optimizing before conversion tracking is verified means bidding on the wrong signal.
5. **Do they promise rankings or results?** Google Ads runs a short auction on every search, and several factors determine the position ([Google’s explanation](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6366577?hl=en), October 2026); nobody can guarantee an outcome. Be wary of anyone who does.
6. **What is the fee model?** Someone paid as a percentage of spend has a stake in growing your budget. That does not make it bad automatically, but it is a question worth asking.

## What to bring to the first conversation

Your monthly ad budget, the result you expect from ads (sales, a form, a phone call), what you currently count as a conversion, and who will implement the recommendations. If I need access to the account, we decide together which permission level to grant, depending on the work.

**How do we start?** First, we talk about what you want and what’s realistic. If it makes sense, I send the scope and price in writing, then we start. You can reach me from the [contact page](https://oguzerol.com/en/contact/).

## Which ad types do I advise on?

All of them are managed from the same Google Ads account; which one we focus on in consulting depends on your business.

### Google Search Ads

![Google Search Ad](https://oguzerol.com/gorseller/google_arama_reklami.webp)

These are the ads that appear above the results when someone searches on Google. You decide which keywords trigger your ad, and in which countries and cities; what you pay per click varies with your industry and competition. In consulting I look at whether the budget goes to the right searches, whether conversions are tracked correctly, and whether the bid strategy suits that tracking.

Beyond search ads, you can also show up in local searches with Maps ads, reach video viewers with [YouTube ads](https://oguzerol.com/en/youtube-ads/), and appear on content sites through [news site ads](https://oguzerol.com/en/google-ads-consulting/#news-site-ads).

### Google Maps Ads

These are the “Sponsored” results at the top when you search for a place on Google Maps. Someone looking for a nearby restaurant, hair salon, auto shop or local service sees you where they are searching. For setup, targeting and measurement details, see the dedicated page: [Google Maps Ads](https://oguzerol.com/en/google-maps-ads/).

### News Site Ads

Most newspapers, magazines, blogs and news sites are connected to Google’s Display Network through Google AdSense. You can buy ad space on those sites through Google Ads without negotiating with each site. Which sites, which categories (finance, sports, tech…) and which audience you show up to is set in Google Ads.

### Google Display Ads

![Google Display Ad](https://oguzerol.com/gorseller/google_goruntulu_reklam.webp)

A large share of the ad space you see while browsing websites belongs to Google’s display network; [news site ads](https://oguzerol.com/en/google-ads-consulting/#news-site-ads) are part of it. With search ads, the search itself triggers the ad, so the person has already shown intent. Display ads have no such trigger, so targeting has to be set separately. For example, an ad for a private school should reach parents of children of that age. There are three routes: focus on who sees the ad, focus on which sites show it, or show it only to people who have visited your site before. They can be combined.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Who holds admin access to my ad account under consulting?

You do. You should always be the sole administrator of your ad account — that’s my first piece of advice. I’m added as an authorized user, and you can revoke my access at any time. Your account, your data, and your history all belong to you.

### How often do we check in?

Usually one longer call a month, with short exchanges in between. During busier periods — a new campaign launch or the start of a season — we increase the frequency. I don’t impose a fixed pattern; we adjust to the rhythm of the work.

### Is consulting cheaper than management?

I cannot give a general price difference; I send the price in writing based on scope. The logic is this: in consulting you do the implementation yourselves, so you are not buying that time from me. But if there’s no one in-house to implement the recommendations, consulting stays on paper and ends up costing more. Base the decision on who’s going to implement it, not on budget alone.

### Do you guarantee results?

No, and nobody can. An auction on every search decides whether your ad is shown. What I can offer is to tell you, with reasoning, why the account is in its current state and what needs to change.

### What if you don’t know my industry?

Over 20 years I’ve worked across everything from hospitality to education, construction to e-commerce. I learn your industry from you in the first two weeks — no one knows your customer better than you do. What I bring isn’t industry knowledge, it’s knowledge of how the ad platform actually behaves.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

## How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your business and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on **a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours** and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend leaves a lasting result in your business. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

## Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
