# CNC Machining Google Ads: Reaching Buyers, Not Machine Shoppers

[Oğuz Erol](https://oguzerol.com/en/about-me/)  |  11 min read

Google Ads for a subcontract CNC machine shop is a small Search campaign for buyers who want to send a drawing for a quote; the primary conversion is a quote request with a STEP or DWG file attached. The trap is the search language: a large share of “CNC” searches most likely come from people buying a machine, looking for a machinist job or learning what CNC is. The second fact follows from the same data: service searches are few, so expect a handful of requests a month and orders counted in months.

## What do CNC machining buyers actually search for?

CNC machining buyers search with service words (“services”, “company”, “near me”, “quote”), a small fraction of all CNC searches. Google Ads Keyword Planner, 14 October 2026 (English, September 2025 – August 2026 average, rounded); the intent column is my reading.

| search | UK / month | US / month | most likely searching |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| cnc machining | 18,100 | 135,000 | mixed: merged with “cnc machine” |
| what is cnc machining | 1,600 | 9,900 | learning |
| cnc machinist jobs | 590 | 5,400 | job seeker |
| cnc machine for sale | 480 | 4,400 | machine buyer |
| cnc machining services | 880 | 8,100 | buyer |
| cnc machining near me | 480 | 1,600 | buyer, local |
| precision machining services | 210 | 880 | buyer |
| cnc milling services | 210 | 1,300 | buyer |
| cnc turning services | 140 | 590 | buyer |
| cnc machining company | 170 | 720 | buyer |
| cnc machining quote | 40 | 110 | buyer, ready |

Two things follow:

1. **Service searches cost far more:** the high end of Google’s top-of-page bid estimate for “cnc machining services” was about 8 times that of “cnc machining” in the UK, 7 times in the US.
2. **Material and prototype searches are thin:** “stainless steel cnc machining” showed 20 a month in the UK, 110 in the US. Handle materials in ad text and the form, not separate ad groups.

No term showed clear seasonality.

## How should the campaign be structured?

Bidding on “cnc machining” alone doesn’t work: Keyword Planner reported “cnc machine” as its close variant in all four markets I measured (UK, US, Germany, Netherlands). Very specific phrases have the opposite problem: keywords with very little search history worldwide over the past 12 months stay inactive under a “Low search volume” status ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2616014?hl=en)). The help page gives no threshold, so check keyword statuses in week one.

The structure I recommend is one campaign with two ad groups:

- **Clear service group:** “cnc machining services”, “cnc milling services”, “cnc turning services”, “precision machining services”, “cnc machining company”, “contract machining”, in phrase match (the words appear in that order, other words allowed around them).
- **Mixed group:** “cnc machining”, “5 axis cnc machining”, “precision machining”, phrase match, lower bids, all negatives, opened after the first three weeks with a daily budget cap.

## Which negative keywords go in on day one?

On day one you exclude machine buyers, job and training seekers, information seekers and hobbyists. A broad negative (no punctuation) blocks searches with all its words in any order, a “phrase” negative the words in that order, an \[exact\] negative only that search. Negatives don’t cover close variants such as plurals, so “job” and “jobs” go in separately ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2453972?hl=en)).

Based on searches I measured in Keyword Planner:

```
"for sale"
used
router
jobs
salary
course
training
"what is"
programming
```

Added by logic or as plural/singular forms, not measured:

```
[cnc machine]
"cnc machines"
"cnc machine price"
second hand
desktop
hobby
diy
job
career
careers
hiring
apprenticeship
courses
pdf
"g code"
```

`[cnc machine]` is exact on purpose: a phrase negative would also block “cnc machine shop”, a natural way to look for a subcontractor (I didn’t measure it; watch your search terms report, which lists the searches your ads appeared on). Leave `router` out if you do router work for customers. “Price” and “cost” are absent on purpose: “cnc machining cost” (UK 110, US 1,000) can be a buyer. Machine brand names (Haas, Mazak) usually mean a machine buyer too. More on upkeep in [negative keyword management](https://oguzerol.com/en/negative-keyword-management/).

## What should the quote form ask for?

The quote form decides conversion quality: asking for drawing, quantity, material and tolerance brings fewer requests, but ones you can price.

| field | why | how |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Drawing | Sets the price | STEP / IGES, DWG / DXF, PDF, plus “I’ll send it later” |
| Quantity | Prototype and batch differ in value | 1–10 · 10–500 · 500+ · recurring orders |
| Material | Machine and tooling choice | Aluminium, stainless, steel, brass, plastics, other |
| Tightest tolerance | Can you do the job | Free text (e.g. ±0.02 mm) |
| Email and company name | Talking to procurement | Required, but don’t demand a company email domain |
| Hidden GCLID field | The GCLID is the ID Google adds to every ad click; it links the request to that click | Invisible to the visitor |

A mandatory drawing filters out unquotable requests, but some buyers want an NDA first; “send it later” and an NDA offer keep them. A company-domain rule turns away small firms writing from Gmail, unseen; company name and file field already filter spam. I found no data on what each required field costs; compare two periods.

## Example headlines

A responsive search ad takes up to 15 headlines (30 characters) and 4 descriptions (90 characters) ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7684791?hl=en)). Buyers look for axes, materials, tolerances and certification; character counts in brackets:

- Subcontract CNC Machining (25)
- Upload a STEP File for a Quote (30), if the form accepts uploads
- 5-Axis CNC Machining (20), if you run 5-axis machines
- Aluminium & Stainless Parts (27)
- ISO 9001 Certified CNC Shop (27), only with a valid certificate
- Tolerances to ±0.01 mm (22), only if you can measure and document it

Example description: “Upload STEP, DWG or PDF drawings; we quote by material and quantity, in writing.” (80 characters).

## Should you target your area or the whole country?

If your parts ship, target the whole country; a radius around an industrial estate suits only a separate small campaign for buyers who visit, need same-day delivery or sit in one cluster. Radius targeting needs at least 1 km, and “Presence or interest” also reaches people merely interested in your area; Google recommends broad geo targeting on Search ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722043?hl=en)). For an industrial-estate campaign choose “Presence”, since the point is the buyer working there.

## How do you reach European buyers as an exporter?

European buyers search in their own language for the service, not for a country. On 14 October 2026 “cnc machining turkey” was below Planner’s threshold in all four markets (UK, US, Germany, Netherlands), as were German “cnc fräsen türkei” and “lohnfertigung türkei”. A foreign shop competes on the same service terms as local ones.

| market | service searches / month | top-of-page bid, high end (UK = 100) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| UK, English | ≈ 2,290 (10 terms below) | 100 (“cnc machining services”) |
| US, English | ≈ 13,900 (same 10 terms) | 89 (“cnc machining services”) |
| Germany, German | ≈ 1,310 (6 terms below); English “cnc machining services” only 110 | 37–66 |

UK/US set: “cnc machining services”, “cnc machining near me”, “precision machining services”, “cnc milling services”, “cnc turning services”, “cnc machining company”, “online cnc machining”, “subcontract machining”, “custom cnc parts”, “cnc machining quote”. German set: “cnc lohnfertigung”, “lohnfertigung cnc”, “cnc fräsen lassen”, “cnc drehteile”, “cnc fräsen lohnfertigung”, “cnc dienstleister”, together about 12 times the English “services” search in Germany (note the German set has 6 terms, the UK/US set 10); a German campaign needs German keywords, ads and landing page. “cnc fräsen” and “cnc fräsmaschine” showed identical figures, so German appears to merge too.

My reading (from bid bands alone): Germany has the cheapest bid band if you can quote in German, but its volume limits it; for “cnc machining services” the UK has the highest bid band of the three, though other terms differ; the US has by far the most searches, but I didn’t measure whether delivery and customs rule you out. I didn’t measure Dutch, French or Italian. Set export campaigns to “Presence”, to reach buyers in the target country.

## How do you track quote requests and choose a bid strategy?

The primary conversion is a drawing-backed quote request; one that becomes an order is uploaded back from your CRM with its GCLID. The click-to-conversion time must be under 14 or 90 days, depending on the data source ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7012522?hl=en)). If you are in Turkey, Google doesn’t offer call forwarding numbers there, so phone calls can’t be tracked by duration; form and coded WhatsApp leads can. Which stage to upload in a long sales cycle: [Google Ads for machine manufacturers](https://oguzerol.com/en/machine-manufacturer/).

Until measurement settles, use Manual CPC (you set each keyword’s maximum bid) or Maximize clicks with a maximum CPC bid limit: the highest bid Google may place, not the price you pay, set from the calculation below. With 2–3 requests a month, Smart Bidding strategies such as Maximize conversions have almost nothing to learn from. Mark only the drawing-backed request as primary; keep phone taps, email clicks and brochure downloads secondary. The most common mistake I see in Google Ads accounts is giving Smart Bidding a fake conversion such as a page view as its goal; in a machine shop, that is counting every machine-list PDF download as a lead.

## How much will it cost, and when does the first order come?

The budget comes from search volume, not a target, and searches are not clicks: clicks = searches × the share your ad appears on (impression share) × click-through rate. UK example; every rate is an assumption, not data from a real shop:

- Searches: the UK service set above, ≈ 2,290 a month.
- Clicks: 2,290 × 50% impression share × 6% click-through rate ≈ 69.
- Requests: 69 × 4% form rate ≈ 2–3 a month.
- Orders: you can price 60% of requests and win 25% of quotes, so each request has a 15% chance of becoming an order: about 0.4 orders a month, one every two and a half months.

By a rough calculation that holds the number of requests fixed, the chance of no order is about 61–72% in the first month, about 27% over three months (≈ 8 requests: 0.85⁸) and near zero over a year. The campaign needs patience more than budget.

The break-even cost per click is a share of your gross profit per order: gross profit × request-to-order probability × click-to-request rate. As a percentage of gross profit per order:

| click → request | 10% become orders | 15% | 25% |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2% | 0.2% | 0.3% | 0.5% |
| 4% | 0.4% | 0.6% | 1.0% |
| 6% | 0.6% | 0.9% | 1.5% |

In currency: Planner’s UK top-of-page range for “cnc machining services” was about £3.09–£28.26, converted from Turkish lira at the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey forex buying rate of 13 October 2026 (£1 = TRY 65.1201); it is not what you pay. At an assumed £12 per click and the middle cell (0.6%), an order must bring at least £2,000 gross profit: 69 clicks cost about £830 a month, and at 0.4 orders a month that is about £2,000 per order. Above that gross profit the ads pay; below it they don’t. Over a full year that is about £10,000 of spend and about 5 expected orders. This covers only the clear service group: “cnc machining” alone (UK 18,100) would add roughly 540 clicks a month under the same assumptions, mostly machine buyers, so open the mixed group late and capped. My review rule, not a measured threshold: after three months, if you can price well under 60% of requests (judge on at least 8–10 requests; with 4, one is just chance), fix keywords or the form before stopping.

The decision number is monthly spend ÷ requests won. Without GCLID, keep a spreadsheet of date, source (“How did you find us?” or a `utm_source=google` tag), quote value and outcome per request. It teaches Google nothing, but shows whether the ads pay.

## What I need from you first

Send your machine list (axes, largest part), materials, certifications and best-margin quantities via the [contact page](https://oguzerol.com/en/contact/); negatives, form and bid limit are built on those.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Should a CNC machine shop run Performance Max?

Not first. [Performance Max](https://oguzerol.com/en/what-is-performance-max/) learns from conversions and largely decides where it shows; two or three requests a month teach it little.

### I subcontract machining and also sell used machines. Can I advertise both in one account?

Yes, as two campaigns with campaign-level negatives: “used” and “for sale” are negatives in the machining campaign only. An account-level list would switch off your own machine ads.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR

## How do I work?
Work-hour packages

Tell me about your business and what you need on WhatsApp or by phone; we agree on **a work block of somewhere between 5 and 40 hours** and I start doing what is needed. What you get is not a calendar window — it is net working hours spent directly on your business. I can use 40 hours working three days straight, or deliberately spread it out and finish it over a year — whatever the work calls for. I do not spend my time estimating how long something will take, I spend it doing the work; every hour I spend leaves a lasting result in your business. We keep going for as long as you find it useful.

WORK BLOCKS

## Why not monthly?
Is 40 hours a week?

On a fixed monthly fee both sides are watching the wrong thing: you watch a fixed cost, the other side watches how many more contracts like this they can line up. Working by the hour puts us both in front of the same thing — the real value of the work that got done. I know not having an upfront answer to "how much will this cost in total?" is the natural cost of this model. But instead of paying a fixed fee for months to a setup that is not producing results, you only pay for the qualified time spent on your work — and you see exactly where that time went, start to finish. That is why my clients keep coming back.
