Showing Ads to Past Customers | Win-Back
Selling again to someone who has already bought is almost always cheaper than finding a new customer. They know the product, they’ve been through checkout, they trusted you. Yet most ad budgets go entirely to cold audiences.
Split by purchase date
When “all customers” is a single audience, the message stays generic. The meaningful split is purchase date: someone who bought last month shouldn’t hear the same thing as someone who bought a year ago. The first needs a complementary product, the second a reason to come back.
Timing depends on how fast the product is consumed
The repurchase window varies by product: 3-4 weeks for something consumed monthly, 10-11 months for a yearly purchase. Win-back campaigns built without knowing this interval arrive either too early or too late.
How to use the list
You can target by uploading your customer list to the ad platform; setup and match-rate issues are covered on the customer match page. The same list is also the best source for building a lookalike — because it’s made of people who actually bought.
Exclude people who are still active
Showing a “come back” ad to a regular customer is both wasted budget and an odd message. Active customers should be removed from the win-back audience.

Frequently Asked Questions
How large does the list need to be?
Match rates are never 100%, so part of the list won’t be found on the platform. Small lists may not reach the serving threshold; in that case a lookalike audience is a better fit.
Does email or phone match better?
Uploading both raises the match rate. With only one field, a significant share of the list is lost.
Any data protection concerns?
Customer data is sent to the platform in hashed form, but before uploading you need to be sure your own privacy notice and consent setup permit it.
